As I watched American Idol this past week with my kids, I saw the top three finalists go to their “homecoming.” Each contestant got to return to their home town where adoring fans welcomed them with screams of joy and adoration. I saw little teenage girls with tears running down their faces screaming, “I LOVE YOU!!!” to their favorite artist.
My first thought was, “Really? Are you serious? You LOVE him? You don’t really know anything about him!” An incredible outpouriong of emotion and adoration and “love” for someone because they sing well. It was somewhat ridiculous. Yet we throw the love word around a lot, don’t we. We say to one anohter, “Love ya!” we love our cars, we love chocolate, we love Chick-fil-A (that’s for Jerry 🙂 ), we love a TV show, we love a movie or a song, we love to play a sport…whatever. Love. Is that what it is? Even when we say we love our spouse or our kids, do we know what it is?
In the 80’s the band Foreigner made the statement “I Wanna Know What Love Is”. Great classic 80’s song! But when we ask that question, where are we looking for the answer? The apostle John answered that question quite simply in his first letter to the church. In 1 John 3:16 he wrote…
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
Ya wanna know what love is? That’s it. It doesn’t have anything ot do with this world or the things in this world. In fact it begs the question, are we really capable of true love? Sunday @ The Ridge, we are ending our series “Ya Know?” in which we have been studying 1 John together. We’ll be exploring more about what love is and how you can KNOW it…because you can’t show love until you know Love.
Join us @ The Ridge this Sunday at 9:30 or 11am. We gather at Austin Middle School on Ridge Road in So. Paulding County. Bring someone with you who needs to know what love is. Come yourself to see if you really have love figured out.
BTW, just for fun and nostagia, here’s the video of that song from days gone by (sorry Mariah Carey, but your version isn’t as good as the original)…
