Sunday Recap 5-16-10

A very special day @ The Ridge today. We are about to end our series “Ya Know?” which has been a great study of 1 John. Today we looked at 1 John 5:14-15 where John writes

14This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

When we pray we can pray with confidence if we KNOW the One who’s listening. And we can be confident that He hears us when we pray according to His will, not ours. When we pray are we praying with selfish motives or are we praying like Jesus, “Not my will but yours.”

Jesus never said to have faith in faith nor to have faith in prayer, but to have faith in God (Mark 11:22). Here’s a shocking statement: Prayer doesn’t change things. It doesn’t…but God does!

Some other highlights of the day:

  • We spent time praying for health, marriages, and financial situations. By far the three most requested prayer needs we see.
  • Very special time of prayer for marriages as our pastors all prayed over people’s marriages as the knelt int he altar. It was powerful! God really moved.
  • Had the chance as a church to gather around Wendell Brewton, our Family Pastor, who is dealing with health issues. He is having a scope of his pancreas Monday. Pray for him. As we prayed for Wendell, many others stood who are dealing with health issues or who know someone who is. The church then had a chance to gather around them and pray. It was very cool.
  • We also introduced our Burkina Faso mission team, which will be leaving for Africa in one month. It was great to see our people excited about what this team is going to do. Knowing that they had already provided the funds to build a church in a village in Burkina through our Faith Initiative campaign was encouraging. People applauded knowing that their investment was gonna be carried out by this team in just a month.
  • It was a different kind of worship gathering in may ways. The teaching time was at the beginning followed by a season of prayer, then a response of worship through song.
  • This was one of those special worship gatherings that if you missed it, you …well, missed it!
  • Don’t miss next week as we finish off this series talking about the first Bible verse that most all of us learned in our lives. And it comes from 1 John, not the gospel of John.
  • On a family note…my wife and two other ladies from The Ridge went to a training conference in Dallas, TX for Fellowship One (which is our database system at The Ridge). It was a two day conference that turned into five days. Their flight home Friday afternoon was canceled because of weather. Then the next flight Saturday morning was canceled too! She was not happy and neither was I, but we held down the fort at home. The bad thing was that today (Sunday) was my 3 year old’s birthday and we had planned to celebrate Saturday, but that obviously changed. Anyway after a lot of frustration, and my wife threatening to go all Jack Bauer on Airtran if they didn’t get her home today 🙂 , she got home about noon today. We had the birthday this evening and all is well! Good to have my better half back home. I am a blessed man!
